Notes for Eliza Mariah Snider
Eliza Mariah was the daughter of Jacob Snider (son of immigrant Harmon Snider) and Jane Milligan. She was reported to be a sturdy woman, devoted to family and friends and never shirked her work.
She married Eli Goodwin, son of John Goodwin and Deborah Drake. Their marriage was recorded on Sept 27, 1827 in Spencer County, Kentucky, however it is possible that they married before that, as their oldest child was born earlier that same year and family lore suggests that Eliza Mariah was only 15 years old when they married, making their actual marriage date sometime in 1825 or 1826.
This couple was instrumental in setting up Spencer County and were among the first residents of the newly formed county. They had at least 13 children, most of whom lived to adulthood.
They made their living farming and owned a good deal of rich farmland.
Following Eli's death in 1872, probably around 1875, Eliza and at least six of her children moved west and settled in Kansas territory, in Labette County. She died in Labette County. Reportedly, there is a monument to her in Spencer County Kentucky, near where her husband was buried and where they farmed, which simply states that she died "Out West".
Many thanks are given to the creator of this memorial for identifying where she was buried.
