ABERDEEN, Wash. - Virgil Ray Britain, 75, of Aberdeen, Wash., died Monday, April 6, 2009, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen. A memorial graveside service will be held at a later date.

Mr. Britain was born Sept. 12, 1933, in Pendleton to Frank Jacob and Anna May (Bashor) Britain. He graduated from Stanfield High School in 1951 and then served three years in the Army, attaining the rank of sergeant before his discharge in 1956.

He worked for Cascade Natural Gas Corporation for almost 39 years, earning many sales awards and eventually serving as district manager in several districts. He retired in 1995. He was affectionately known as "Pompa" to his grandchildren.

Mr. Britain is survived by his son, Jeff Britain of Hood River; daughter Jane Attwood of Aberdeen, Wash.; sisters Edna Peterson of Pendleton and Pat Massie of Hermiston; ex-wife and longtime friend Lora Looman of Bend; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Survivors include his son, Jeff Britain of Hood River; daughter, Ceridwen Attwood of Aberdeen, Wash; his former wife, Lora Looman of Bend; sisters, Edna Peterson of Pendleton and Pat Massie of Hermiston; granddaughter, Caitlin Attwood of Olympia, Wash.; grandsons, Jamie Colin and Alex Attwood, all of Aberdeen, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Frank, Eugene, Jack and Charles Britain; sisters Bertha Britain, Marie Blakley and Ruth Hoover; and lifelong friend Wes Heller.

Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements.
