Troutdale resident Florence May Bowe, 77, died Monday, June 2, at her home.

A visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 8, at Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes, 11667 S.E. Stevens Road, Portland. A funeral service will be at noon Monday, June 9, at Sunnyside. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 S.E. Mount Scott Blvd., Portland.

Florence was born June 8, 1930, in White Salmon, Wash., to John E. and Florence (Junkin) Chappell. She spent most of her early years in Portland. Florence attended several schools, including Washington High School, and graduated from Toledo High School in Toledo. She attended Oregon State University.

On Feb. 10, 1950, she married Lawrence G. Bowe at Mispah Presbyterian Church in Portland.

Florence worked as a homemaker, telephone operator and genealogist. She spent 40 years doing genealogy work, and she assisted her uncle, Will Junkin, in writing the Gerking Family history book, which she later updated.

She was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, and she taught from the Bible via the Good News Club ministry in Portland until her deafness caused her to retire. After moving to Troutdale in 1996, she attended Troutdale Community Church. She was also known for the many layette sets she crocheted and donated to the Pregnancy Resource Center to be given to newborn babies.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, on April 3, 2008, her brother, Ronald Chappell, and her sister, Joy Myers.

Survivors include her daughters, Patricia Doebler of Sutherlin and Linda Abitz of Port Richey, Fla.; sister, Grace Melvin of Glide; eight grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Ray Hickey Hospice House, 2112 E. Mill Plain Blvd., Vancouver, Wash., 98661.

Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes is handling arrangements.
